Natural Remedies for Insomnia

No one really wants to rely on medication to help them sleep, so many are seeking out natural remedies that will help them sleep peacefully all night long.

There are some really wonderful and enjoyable ways for your mind and body to get the rest it needs.

Aromatherapy is known to help many people relax and sleep peacefully. Lavender oil is a great solution that can be used for relaxation. Just add a drop or two into a pot of water and boil. Then you can breath in the soothing and relaxing aroma.

If you can find a partner to give you a massage this can also help with insomnia. You need to have your body and mind in a state of relaxation before you ever crawl in your bed to go to sleep. You can find many books at your library on massaging and more specifically can teach you how to massage your stress and tension away.

Many people that suffer from insomnia agree that some herbs do help rid the body of stress and tension and give you a relaxing feeling. Some of the ways to use herbs for relaxation is: herb teas, tinctures, pillow stuffed with herbs, herbal bath and massage oil made of herbs. You can talk with someone at your local herb shop to learn which are best for relieving stress and helping with sleep.

For some people eating a large meal late in the evening can cause them to have a hard time falling asleep. So, do not eat a heavy meal full of fatty foods after 6pm. This may cure your insomnia if you usually enjoy your evening meal at a later time.

Exercise before going to bed can also help with those that suffer from insomnia. Mild exercise such as a walk around the neighborhood or yoga is the most recommended. You just want to be sleepy yet not exhausted.

Listening to quiet music or sounds that are relaxing can also help to put your mind and body into a relaxing state.

Natural Herbal Remedies-harmful effects and things to avoid

Natural herbal remedies are good medicine. There is no doubt about that fact. What is so amazing about natural herbal remedies is their close association to our modern medicines. Most of our current “wonder drugs” have a botanical connection. However, there are over 300,000 higher plant species. A good herbalist may know of one or two thousand of them. This means that even an experienced herbalist can make mistakes. Let’s take a look at some of the most common problems.

In recent years the issue of Alternative Healing has skyrocketed to the forefront of the medical field. A 2004 government survey concluded that more than one third of adults use alternative medicine and healing.

However, there are over 300,000 higher plant species. A good herbalist may know of one or two thousand of them. This means that even an experienced herbalist can make mistakes. Let’s take a look at some of the most common problems.

Pregnant women should avoid barberry root bark, cascara sagrada, feverfew, juniper berries, mugwort, pennyroyal, pokeroot, rue, senna, southernwood, tansy, thuja and wormwood. All of those herbs can increased a risk for miscarriage. Safe herbs during pregnancy would be Manna, Butternut Bark or Root, Flax Seed, Slippery Elm and Lemon Verbena.

No matter what herb(s) you are taking, be mindful of anything unexpected. Stop taking whatever it is and consult an expert you can trust.

Make certain you have the correct diagnosis. Diagnosis is not easy and sometimes doctors make mistakes. Generally, however, a doctor is much better equipped to diagnose. Discuss any planned herbal discipline you plan to undertake with your physician.

Watch for any allergic reactions. Even though you may have never had any allergies in the past, if you are embarking on an herbal journey, watch carefully for any adverse reactions. If you experience difficulty in breathing within 30 minutes of trying a new herb, food or drug, call 911 immediately! You may be having an anaphylactic reaction which is the most severe form of allergic reaction. This condition can quickly become fatal unless treated promptly. This reaction is rare, but you need to be careful and be aware.

Watch for any interactions. Medicines often interact negatively with one another. So do herbs. Always be careful when taking more than one drug or herb or a combination of both. If you suspect an interaction consult your physician or pharmacist.

One interaction that you should be aware of is Antidepressants known as monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors. They interact badly with wine, cheese and many other foods. St. John’s Wort is also an MAO inhibitor so the same food restrictions apply. If you plan on using St. John’s Wort, discuss it with your physician or pharmacist.Lastly, make certain that both your physician AND your herbalist are fully aware of all medications and/or herbal treatments you are using.

Natural Remedies and Supplements for Diabetes

An article from the author's book "Collected Remedies" about natural remedies for diabetes.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which blood-sugar (glucose) levels are above normal—either the body doesn’t produce enough of the hormone insulin, which breaks down sugar in the blood, or it cannot utilize its own insulin properly. Diabetes can cause serious health complications including blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, and even limb loss. The good news is that if you are one of the 20.8 million Americans struggling with diabetes (type 1 and type 2 combined) there are natural approaches to help avoid these life-threatening conditions.

As in almost all areas of health, exercise and proper diet can help tremendously for diabetes. That does not mean a heavy exercise regimen nor does it mean a radical weight loss. Moderate exercise and a weight lose of only 5% or slightly more can make a substantial difference (and that holds true for those considered significantly overweight as well as those carrying a few pesky extra pounds. To achieve a 5% or more weight loss may require no more than cutting out soft drinks and taking regular walks for example. At any rate, losing 5% is easily achievable with modest exercise and a sensible diet that includes plenty of vegetables and fruit (though little or no fruit juice because of its high sugar content), fermented whole grains, and getting rid of dangerous trans fats.

In addition to sensible dieting and physical activities, the following have all shown the ability to help with diabetes:

Pycnogenol - Pycnogenol is a powerful antioxidant derived from French maritime pine tree bark and the subject of more than 180 studies over 35 years which has been shown to reduce high blood pressure, LDL cholesterol and blood glucose without affecting insulin levels. Of particular note is its ability to reduce leakage into the retina by repairing capillaries in the eyes. While still largely unknown to American doctors, Pycnogenol is the leading prescription for diabetic retinopathy in France.

Bitter Guord - Make a watery juice of a small Bitter Guord (remove seeds) and drink every morning. Bitter Guord also helps to clear pimples and maintain a good skin, and is good for de-worming the intestines.

Fenugreek seed - Soak fenugreek seeds in about one teaspoon in water at night, drink that water in the morning and chew and eat the soaked seeds. Helps reduce blood sugar.

Green plaintain peels - Wash a green plantain and peel it, then put the peel in a jar and cover with water. Let sit overnight, and then drink this water three times a day. Lowers your blood sugar level. Keep drinking as needed and change the peel every other day and refill the jar with water.

Mullaca - Mullaca is employed in herbal medicine systems today in both Peru and Brazil. In Peruvian herbal medicine the plant is called mullaca or bolsa mullaca. To treat diabetes, the roots of three mullaca plants are sliced and macerated in 1/4 liter of rum for seven days. Honey is added, and 1/2 glass of this medicine is taken twice daily for 60 days. In addition, an infusion of the leaves is recommended as a good diuretic, and an infusion of the roots is used to treat hepatitis. For asthma and malaria, the dosage is 1 cup of tea made from the aerial parts of the plant. In Brazilian herbal medicine the plant is employed for chronic rheumatism, for skin diseases and dermatitis, as a sedative and diuretic, for fever and vomiting, and for many types of kidney, liver, and gallbladder problems.

Agaricus Blazei Murrill (ABM) Mushroom – referred to in it’s native Brazil as “The Mushroom of the Gods” with good reason due to it’s amazing immune boosting and disease fighting properties. Available in health food stores.

Alpha Lipoic Acid - In Germany, alpha-lipoic acid is an approved medical treatment for peripheral neuropathy, a common complication of diabetes. It speeds the removal of glucose from the bloodstream, at least partly by enhancing insulin function, and it reduces insulin resistance, an underpinning of many cases of coronary heart disease and obesity. The therapeutic dose for lipoic acid is 600 mg/day. In the United States, it is sold as a dietary supplement, usually as 50 mg tablets. (The richest food source of alpha-lipoic acid is red meat – but to insure proper health, use lean cuts of organic beef that has not been subject to antibiotics or feed lot practices)

Cat’s Claw – Used by indigenous tribes in Peru and South America to treat diabetes. Available at health food stores.

"Oleander Soup" - A carefully prepared aqueous extract of the oleander plant made according to the directions in the book "Cancer's Natural Enemy"(http://www.rose-laurel.com). Diabetics who have used this remedy report being able to either reduce or eliminate medications altogether, often being able to control their diabetes with diet alone. Note: Oleander is extremely poisonous in raw form, but safe when boiled and strained according to the directions in the book.

Other Good Foods and Supplements - Almonds, apples, oranges, and substances high in omega three oils (olive oil, flaxseed oil, fish oil, borage oil)

Brahmi - Herbal Brain Tonic To Increase Memory

By Dr John Anne

General Description

The traditionally venerated brahmi of Ayurvedic medicine is popular as water hyssop in the west. Other popular names used in different parts of the world are thyme-leafed gratiola and moneywort. It is an indigenous Indian herb which grows in large numbers near the marshy areas. Brahmi is a small creeping herb with white or pinkish flowers. Apart from India, it also grows in China, Nepal, Sri Lanka and even as far west as in the Florida state of US.

Brahmi is Bacopa monnieri according to its binomial classification. Its medicinal properties are derived from the two main alkaloids present in it – brahmine and herpestine. Apart from these, there are other chemicals in the brahmi, including several acids, saponins and esters, which make it a valuable herb in Ayurvedic medicine. In Ayurvedic parlance, the chemicals present in the herb are also known as brahmi.

Properties

Brahmi is known in Ayurvedic medicine for the following curative properties:-

(i) Brahmi is a bitter and cooling herb with an astringent taste.

(ii) Recent studies have shown brahmi improves the intellect. Children in Indian families are consecrated with brahmi since ages to give them an intelligent mind.

(iii) Brahmi is both a nerve tonic as well as a cardio tonic.

(iv) Brahmi helps in solving urinary problems as it is a diuretic.

(v) Brahmi helps in adapting and acclimatizing to a new place. It is an adaptogenic.

(vi) Brahmi is a nootropic, i.e. a drug that increases cognitive ability.

(vii) Brahmi has antioxidant properties, due to which it protects the nutrients from getting oxidized (and hence destroyed) in the body.

(viii) Brahmi is a blood purifying agent.

(ix) An ethanolic extract of the herb has given evidence of anti-carcinogenic activity in humans, but this is yet to be concretely studied.

Uses

Brahmi has been used since ages for the treatment of the following diseases.

(i) Dandruff

Brahmi oil replenishes the hair roots. If brahmi oil is applied each night before going to bed, it will cure all dandruff problems and also make hair stronger (see in ‘Hair Loss’).

(ii) Epilepsy

The entire brahmi plant is useful in the treatment of epilepsy. The juice of the plant is extracted and used in the preparation of the medicine. In the treatment of epilepsy, brahmi is traditionally used in conjunction with vacha.

(iii) Hair Loss

Brahmi is renowned in Ayurvedic medicine for the proper growth of hair. Its antioxidant properties allow the proper nourishment to reach the hair roots and thus promote their growth. Brahmi is an essential component of many herbal oils. Using such oils make the head cool, as well as allow the hair to grow luxuriantly and with luster. The oil also prevents split ends and discoloration of the hair.

(iv) Insomnia

Brahmi is a cooling agent. When applied on the scalp in the form of oil, brahmi relaxes the brain and induces good and restful sleep throughout the night. One Ayurvedic recipe for treating insomnia is as follows: brahmi, vacha and amalaki powders are made in equal proportions. This powdered mixture is to be consumed thrice a day in the dose of one teaspoon. The powder can also be taken dissolved in a cup of water or milk.

(v) Mental Problems

Perhaps the most major use of brahmi is in the treatment of several mental problems in humans. Taken on a regular basis, brahmi helps to increase the concentration of humans and improves their memory and retention capacity. It is believed that consecrating children with brahmi oils gives makes them into intelligent individuals. Regular use of the brahmi oil is effective in treating mental imbalances, emotional disturbances and also in the prevention and cure of geriatric mental problems such as amnesia and Alzheimer’s. Brahmi vati, an important Ayurvedic preparation containing brahmi along with jatamansi (muskroot) and serpagandha (rauwolfia) is used as a brain tonic.

(vi) Syphilis

Brahmi has antibacterial properties. A paste of its leaves is applied on syphilitic sores. This helps the sores to heal quickly. Regular application of the paste of brahmi leaves can treat the syphilis completely.

Special Ayurvedic Preparations

The following are some Ayurvedic preparations in which brahmi is the main ingredient:-

(i) Brahmi ghrita

Brahmi is boiled in pure cow’s ghee along with some other herbs. This preparation is known as brahmi ghrita. Brahmi ghrita is taken orally in one teaspoon amount twice a day on an empty stomach for people who are suffering from amnesia.

(ii) Brahmi taila

Brahmi oil is used for application on the head. Besides brahmi, this oil can also contain amalaki, camphor, etc.

(iii) Brahmi vati

Brahmi vati is prepared by mixing the powders of brahmi with jatamansi (muskroot) and serpagandha (rauwolfia). This is used as a brain tonic. This is used in improving mental capacity, becoming more active and reducing anxiety and stress.

Precautions

Brahmi has some drawbacks, for which its use must be restricted. An excess of brahmi prevents the oxidation of fats in the bloodstream. This makes the fats accumulate in the blood, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disorders.

Changing To Natural Arthritis Medication

By Wendy Owen

Most arthritis sufferers have probably toyed with the idea of switching over to natural arthritis medication for pain relief. Perhaps they are concerned with the dangerous side effects of NSAIDS and Steroids, or maybe because their current medication is becoming too expensive.

Lack of knowledge about natural arthritis pain relief can sometimes put people off changing. It's not easy to find the time to research natural alternatives and we're not sure they're going to work anyway.

We get used to doing things a certain way and nobody really likes change especially when they're getting on in years. However if changing medication would mean an improvement in our health, wouldn't it be worth the effort?

Natural medications can relieve pain without negatively impacting on our general health. In fact some arthritis pain medication can actually benefit your health at the same time as relieving pain, inflammation and stiffness.

Some doctors and rheumatologists shy away from giving advice on natural medication. It's not their fault, medical training deals almost exclusively with allopathic solutions. Doctors are also bombarded with information and samples from drug companies who are, after all, businesses focussed on making a profit.

However in recent years the trend is changing. Medical practitioners are slowly accepting natural medications and treatments, maybe in part because some of their patients have told them of their positive experiences with the safer more natural alternatives.

So what is the best way to incorporate natural arthritis medications into our pain relief arsenal and can we realistically hope to make a complete switch to natural arthritis medication?

There are many natural treatments and natural medications to relieve arthritis pain so pick one that appeals to you and try it for a while. Natural arthritis remedies can take a while before the full effects are felt so give them a chance. In our instant society we expect instant results, but patience with natural medications reaps rewards.

When you have found a remedy or treatment that works for you, start reducing your chemical pain relief medication gradually. You will find in time that you can reduce your dependence on the drugs and hopefully cut them out altogether.

What are a few examples of natural remedies you could try? Well the first and most obvious is to lose a few pounds; that is if you are overweight. Your joints are struggling as it is, they don't need extra weight to cope with. This applies particularly to the hip and knee joints.

Exercise, as well as helping to shed the kilos, is very beneficial for arthritis sufferers. It strengthens the muscles that support the joints, prevents bone thinning and releases certain chemical called endorphins which promote a feeling of well being and help to relive pain.

A good diet pays a vital role in arthritis management, however these days our soils can be deficient in nutrients, so supplementing with certain vitamins may be helpful. Vitamin C is not stored in the body so needs to be taken daily. Vitamin C acts as an anti inflammatory as well as ridding the body of free radicals.

The vitamin B group, specifically B5 and B6 can aid in reducing swelling. The B vitamins are also good for relieving stress.

Vitamin E is a strong antioxidant which protects the joints from free radicals. It can also increase joint flexibility.

There are many other natural arthritis medications which are less well known, too many to list here. Some are as potent as Ibuprofen, but without the side effects.

In some cases arthritis can be cured or at least significantly reversed by switching to natural medication. Because natural medications can be fairly powerful, your doctor or naturopath's advice is recommended especially if you are already taking medication of some kind.

Natural Remedy For Hair Loss

By Arturo Ronzon

Are you losing sleep over your hair loss troubles? Hair loss can be a miserable trauma for most people. However, there is no reason to lose heart. There exists a gamut of natural remedies for effectively arresting hair loss, and to grow the lost hair back as well.

Herbal remedies are the best available options for treating hair loss. Not only are herbal remedies cost effective, these do not produce undesirable side effects as well.

Following are some of the herbs that are to be applied on the scalp and are available quite easily.

Aroma therapists use essential oils extracted from lavender and bay and mix these with an almond, sesame or soybean oil base to make a concoction that stimulates the hair follicles on the scalp. This should be kept applied for at least twenty minutes before washing off with a good herbal shampoo.

Saw Palmetto has been found to be an effective remedy for hair loss, because it blocks over-secretion of the male hormone androgen, believed to be one of the principal causes of hair loss. However, women undergoing hormone replacement therapy or taking oral contraceptive pills should not use this herb.

The herbs rosemary, nettle, peach leaf, burdock and sage, when mixed together and boiled in water and strained, gives a potion which when used to wash the hair regularly results in a thick growth of hair.

Nettles have a high content of Vitamins A and C, as well as several important minerals that aid combat degeneration of the scalp follicles. The enzyme 5-alpha reductase is responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone – the metabolite that is responsible for atrophy of hair follicles. Nettle root extract is has been proved to be effective in inhibiting the enzyme, thereby preventing excessive production of DHT and averting hair loss.

The beneficial effects of Aloe Vera on the skin are countless. It heals the scalp, balances the H level of the scalp and helps relax the pores on the scalp. A little wheat germ oil and coconut milk, when mixed with Aloe Vera and used as a hair-rinse, produces miraculous results.

Guggul – Herbal Remedies To Lower Cholesterol

By Dr John Anne

General Description

The guggul tree (sometimes spelt as ‘guggulu’) is an indigenous Indian tree which found abundantly in the temperate climates of north India. It is a small shrub, not more than 4 meters in height. It has a thin bark with thorny branches and trifoliate leaves. It has red or pink flowers with four petals each.

The gum of the guggul tree is used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine. This gum is a yellowing resinous substance that is obtained from the stem of the guggul plant. The guggul plant is very well established in Ayurveda. Even in Sushruta Samhita, one of the most detailed works on Ayurvedic medicine, the virtues of the guggul in the treatment of obesity and rheumatism are recorded. Guggul is commercially available for the treatment of cholesterol and triglyceride deposits in the body. Western research has proven that guggulsterone, a chemical available in the guggul gum is the main beneficial factor in lowering cholesterol. Guggulipid, an extract of the guggul gum is also effective in lowering blood cholesterol.

The guggul is famous in the west with the name mukul myrrh tree. Biologically, it is named Commiphora wightii or Commiphora mukul. In Ayurveda, guggul is rarely taken in its pure form. Whenever it is prescribed for direct oral medication, the guggul needs to be purified. This method of purifying the guggul herb is known as the shodhana. Shodhana is done by boiling the herb in either cow’s milk or its urine. This makes the drug more acceptable to the human body, but it reduces its volatile oil content and hence makes the drug a little less effective in therapeutic terms.

Properties

Guggul is known to have the following properties:-

(i) Guggul disintegrates the cholesterol accumulated in the body. Hence it is used in the treatment of various cardiovascular problems.

(ii) Guggul flushes out the toxins from the body and promotes easy digestion of foods. It has a mild laxative effect.

(iii) Guggul is known to be a liver stimulator.

(iv) Guggul purifies the blood.

(v) Guggul has a treating effect on the nervous system.

Uses

(i) Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis is a special type of arthritis which affects the cervical vertebrae, i.e. the vertebrae of the neck region. For the treatment of this disease, guggul is by far the best remedy. It is used in the form of its preparation Simhanada Guggul. The dosage prescribed for the patients is two to four tablets twice a day, followed by a glass of hot water or milk. Due to its laxative effect, it also removes the ama, i.e. the toxic buildup of waste materials in the body. If the bowels move in a regular fashion, the pains of spondylosis are very much reduced. In fact it is only after treating constipation first that any medication for the spondylosis would work.

(ii) Constipation

Guggul is a laxative. It facilitates the movement of the bowels and keeps the digestive system clean.

(iii) Obesity

Guggul is used primarily in the treatment of obesity. It is used in a very unconventional way. The gum resin of the guggul is used to make incense sticks. These are lighted and the fumes are inhaled. Guggul can also be given internally for obese people. Both Navaka Guggul and Triphala Guggul are effective in the treatment of obesity.

(iv) Rheumatism

Yogaraj Guggul is extensively used in the treatment of rheumatism. Two to four tablets twice a day need to be taken. The dose must be followed by a glass of hot water or milk.

(v) Sciatica

Guggul is very effective in treating problems related to the nervous system. It is given to the patient of sciatica in the form of Yogaraja Guggul, of which guggul is the main ingredient. The dosage is two tablets four times a day along with warm milk or water.

Special Ayurvedic Preparations

(i) Guggul Tiktaka ghrita

Guggul Tiktata ghrita is elaborately prepared by boiling guggul in a special kind of butter.

(ii) Navaka Guggul

Navaka Guggul is a combination of guggul with other important herbs. It is generally used in weight loss.

(iii) Simhanada Guggul

Simhanada Guggul is a preparation with guggul with the main ingredient which is used as treatment for cervical spondylosis.

(iv) Triphala Guggul

Triphala Guggul is a compound extract (of triphala) to which guggul is added.

(v) Yogaraja Guggul

Yogaraja Guggul is a very special preparation with guggul as the main ingredient. It is a mixture of about twenty powder extracts, among which guggul is the chief ingredient. It is used as a carminative, for lowering cholesterol and as an antipyretic.

Apart from these, there are many other guggul preparations being widely used such as Gokshuradi Guggul, Salai Guggul, Amrutadi Guggul, Kaishora Guggul, Kanchanara Guggul, Trayodashanga Guggul and Maha Yogaraja Guggul.

Precautions

The use of guggul must always be done under the supervision of an Ayurvedic physician. Excess of guggul almost always causes a rash on the body. But there are other more serious problems associated with an over-intake of guggul. For one, guggul interferes with the liver functions. Hence people with liver conditions must not use guggul. Guggul is used in the treatment of digestive problems. But an excess of guggul can worsen the conditions. People having constant problems such as diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disorder must avoid taking guggul.

Natural Remedy for Hemorrhoids and Constipation

Author: Igor First

About half of the population in the U.S.A. will suffer from hemorrhoids at some point in life. Although hemorrhoids occur in almost everyone, they become large and cause problems in only 4 percent of the general population. Hemorrhoids do not usually go away completely once you have them. They can get improved, however, so that living with them is tolerable. Living with hemorrhoids can become intolerable especially when they are accompanied with constipation. On the other hand, continuous constipation can became the main cause for development of initial hemorrhoids and their further growth. In order to avoid constipation and to ensure regular stools, practitioners suggest diet rich in fiber and drinking eight or more glasses of water each day... but this is easier said than done.

If you aren't able to eat enough high-fiber food or if you still suffer from constipation and hemorrhoids we suggest the following natural remedy based on common herbs:

- Boil one cup of Chamomile tea (Latin name: Matricaria recutia) and wait to chill for 5 minutes.

- Put one spoon Psyllium Seeds (Plantago Psyllium) in the cup and leave it for 30 minutes.

- Drink the mixture every day before bedtime.

- Don’t forget to drink a lot of water during the day.

(The needed herbs are available over the counter in the most pharmacies)

Regular consumption of the suggested herbal mixture will not only regulate your stool but also will help hemorrhoids to shrink as a result of the ingredients in the herbs and their combined effects. Children under two years, pregnant women and people allergic to dust or grass should avoid Psyllium.

Using natural herbal remedies to treat hemorrhoids is the best way to improve your general health, to avoid expensive surgeries or bothersome and long term conventional treatments. Sometimes the natural medicine has more efficient and less expensive therapies than the conventional medicine. When the hemorrhoids are in question, we can say that the conventional medicine has failed.

This natural remedy is not cure for hemorrhoids but it should relief hemorrhoidal pain, reduce rectal bleeding and will make living whit hemorrhoids much easier at no or very small cost.

Natural Heartburn Remedies: Some Common Misconceptions

By Lloyd Morgan

For many, heartburn is an annoying and painful condition that occurs after eating too much or scoffing the wrong types of food. For others it is a regular misery that may lead to the development of serious health complications. Being such a common complication, misconceptions abound about it. Before looking for natural remedies for heartburn, take a look at a few of the most common myths.

The first common misconception is that heartburn is caused by too much stomach acid. Stomach acid is secreted by the proton pump in the stomach lining. Its purpose is to render the right acidity for stomach enzymes to do their work. As acid is the agent that causes heartburn, it's natural to think that the problem is due to excess.

In fact, stomach acid levels in heartburn sufferers are often normal or even below normal. It's the reflux of the acid into the gullet that causes heartburn and this is a problem with the lower esophageal sphincter. The problem can have many causes. It can be caused by eating such substances as chocolate, or through excess pressure in the stomach via carbonated drinks for instance.

Another myth about heartburn is that stress is a major cause. This arises from the stereotype of stressed-out executives hunched over in pain and swigging antacids. However their problem is more likely to be stomach ulcers. While stress can aggravate heartburn, it is not usually the direct cause.

The problem is that stress plays havoc with our lifestyles. It deprives us of the time and mood to exercise and relax and to eat regular, nutritious meals. If affects our sleep and leaves us less time to take care of ourselves. It makes us smoke and drink more. These are all factors that can spark off a heartburn attack.

However the most serious misconception about heartburn is that it is a trivial complaint. Two million Americans go to the doctor with heartburn every day so it's natural to think of it as something like the common cold -an annoyance that will go away on its own.

But chronic heartburn can have a profound impact on your life. If untreated, serious complications can result such as erosive esophagitis or even cancer. If you suffer from severe or persistent attacks of heartburn you must visit your doctor.

Understanding your health condition clearly is the first step towards dealing with it. Once you know the cause, you can choose the natural remedy for heartburn that will work best for you.

Do you think cutting out acidic foods will help heartburn. The answer might surprise you. Find out at: http://natural-heartburn-remedies.blogspot.com

Natural Remedies For The Common Cold

By Michelle Newport

Avoiding catching a cold can sometimes be impossible, especially when everyone around you seems to have one. For many, the first response will be to run to the local drugstore to buy one of the many cold medicines available. Since there is no "cure" for the common cold, these medications actually only suppress the symptoms rather than curing them.

Coughing, sneezing and a runny nose are some of the ways the body tries to "clean house" of accumulated mucous. The key to getting over a cold quickly is to aid your body in ridding itself of the cold.

The First Sign of a Cold

One of the most effective ways to overcome a cold is by addressing it as soon as possible when seeing the first signs. Don't wait until it has progressed to the point of becoming uncomfortable. Again, don't suppress the symptoms, but rather give your body what it needs in order to expel toxins from the body. Drinking lots of water is very beneficial when we are healthy, but it is even more so when we are sick. Water will thin mucous making it easier for the body to expel.

The amount of water a person will need depends on the size of each individual. In order to find out how much water you should be drinking, take your body weight and divide it by 2. This will give you the number in ounces of eater you should drink each day. Be sure to sip your water throughout the day rather than drinking it all at once. This will ensure the water is being efficiently used by your body rather than going straight through the urinary system and being passed through urination.

Open Up The Channels Of Elimination

Though not a commonly discussed topic for conversation, having regular bowel movements (at least 2 a day) is important for overall health. The colon is one of the main channels of elimination and making sure this channel is functioning as it should is also important for staying healthy and will also help in getting over a cold quickly. Again, drinking lots of water is also beneficial, along with getting enough fiber in your diet.

The skin is another channel of elimination. Taking sweat baths will help to take the pressure off the respiratory system. Drawing baths, that help to draw toxins from the body is also beneficial. A simple recipe for a drawing bath is to add 1 cup of Epsom salt and 1 cup of baking soda to a warm bath. Soak for about 20 minutes.

Using Food As Medicine

Our Creator has given our bodies the amazing ability to heal itself when we give our bodies the food it needs along with using herbs and essential oils as medicine.

Many times when you have a bad cold with your head stopped up and feeling achy all over, the last thing you want to do is eat. This is a good indication that your body doesn't need food. If you do eat, be sure to eat foods that are light, such as broths and fruits. Avoid dairy products like milk, cheese and ice cream as these produce excess mucous in the body.

Rose Hips is an herb that is naturally rich in Vitamin C and is an ideal source.

Lemon: Squeeze fresh lemon juice in pure water and sip. Lemon is an astringent and will help to break up the mucous. Lemon is also a detoxifier.

Lemongrass: Reduces fluid secretions and acts as an astringent, mild sedative, and a mild pain reliever.

Slippery Elm: A fiber that is very soothing. Excellent for an upset stomach or diarrhea. Be sure to restore potassium and minerals after bouts of diarrhea.

Effective Herbal Remedies For Hot Flashes

By Linda J Bruton

Herbal remedies for hot flashes are an alternative to the use of hormonal therapy. This route is taken when it has been determined that hormonal therapy is too dangerous for a particular patient. This is particularly true for women who have had breast cancer.

But as recent studies have made all too clear - hormone therapy can actually increase the risk of breast cancer, stroke, and heart problems. The herbal remedies for hot flashes are all scientifically based and in many cases the hormonal treatments are based in part from the herbal remedies.

Certain plants are capable of creating estrogenic and progestational effects, thereby achieving the same or similar results as hormone therapy. In the United States the idea of using herbal remedies for hot flashes is just finally gaining widespread acceptance while in Germany 70% of doctors prescribe herbal remedies. In Europe herbal remedies are also covered by insurance in the same manner as hormonal therapy.

Herbal remedies for hot flashes include Black Cohosh, also known as Squawroot, Black snakeroot, Rattle weed. Hot flashes are some of the early symptoms of menopause and include night sweats, anxiety, and sleeplessness. Your hot flashes can generally last from just a few seconds to 6 minutes or longer and come on several times a day. The degree will vary from person to person and in some can be very severe.

Hot flashes can not only be very embarrassing but also debilitating as well. They can cause you to have problems sleeping at all or to toss and turn all night. One of the most effective herbal remedies for hot flashes involves using the rhizome of the Black Cohosh plant. Native Americans would boil this plant to make a tea that would treat various illnesses that affected women. This herbal remedy works by blocking the receptors for estrogen, which results in the LH (a hormone) being lowered.

You will need to consult with your herbalist to determine if this will work for you. They will tell you how to take this herb to gain the best results for your case. Or you may want to try one of the many herbal remedies already available in health food stores that contain black cohosh. Many doctors today have also been studying homeopathic medicine as well to provide another alternative.

The use of herbal remedies for hot flashes is a natural process. When used as prescribed they have not had any reports of toxic side effects. That certainly isn't the case with hormone replacement therapy!

How Effective Are Herbal Remedies As Natural Cures for Prostate Cancer?

By Trevor Mulholland

The debate surrounding the effectiveness of using natural cures for prostate cancer has gone on for quite some time. Although some people are advocating the use of herbal medicines and other natural processes in treating cancer, most of the scientific community is still hesitant to endorse such options.

According to some medical societies, natural cures for prostate cancer are not accurately termed since these natural procedures and materials cannot really cure cancer but are mostly used to improve the quality of life of cancer patients. Natural treatment methods are usually based on proper nutrition. Herbs, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are the most common basic ingredients of these so-called natural cures.

Most natural treatment options are based on herbs or antioxidants. In studies advocating the use of natural methods for treating prostate cancer, saw palmetto is often highlighted. This herb is primarily known for its anabolic properties and is more commonly used in treating benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). The herb operates by inhibiting the synthesis of growth-stimulating dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and promoting DHT elimination through the lowering of estrogen levels.

According to several clinical studies, saw palmetto is actually more effective in treating enlarged prostate than the prescribed drug, Proscar. These studies also argue that using the herb is better than using Proscar since the latter is more expensive and is associated with several side effects that include erectile dysfunction.

Another popular herbal remedy promoted by a number of studies is pygeum. Pygeum is an indigenous African remedy derived from tree bark. This herbal remedy contains chemicals that inhibit DHT synthesis and is often used to treat enlarged prostate. Aside from saw palmetto and pygeum, there is another herbal remedy that has become popular among natural cure advocates, and this is Cernilton. This herbal product is prepared from the extract of rye pollen and is used to treat BPH and prostatitis. In some parts of the world, the herb stinging nettle is also used to cure prostate disorders. This herb is marketed in the Europe under the name Bazoton.

Some natural remedies for prostate cancer and other prostate disorders use antioxidants as their primary ingredients. Lycopene, resveratrol and selenium are among some of the more common of these antioxidants. Most herbal remedies or antioxidant-based cures are marketed as supplements since absolute confirmation of their ability to cure cancer has yet to be issued by medical and health authorities.

The effectiveness of natural cures for prostate cancer has not yet been fully agreed on and some medical societies still oppose the use of these remedies. Nevertheless, advocates of these methods are continuously promoting them as treatment options for cancer.

A Natural Remedy for Gingivitis, Toothaches, and Mouth Sores

By Rudy Silva

Everyone has a variety of bacteria in their mouth. Some have more than others. This bacterium helps you by beginning the digestive process.

Excess bacteria in your mouth have now been found to cause more than tooth decay, gingivitis or gum disease. So, you need to know, even though you might not have gingivitis, how to control these plaque-building bacteria in your mouth.

Bacteria that create gingivitis live in your plaque and cause your gums to inflame, bleed, and separate from your teeth. You can also have bad breath when you have gingivitis. In more severe cases, your gums become sore, teeth hurt, gums recede, and teeth loosen.

To stop the inflammation and gum separation use this natural remedy to kill some of these bacteria and strengthen your gums in your mouth.

Here are the herbs and the formula you will need to make a remedy for a mild case of gingivitis:

2 parts white oak bark herb – powder

1 part myrrh gum herb – power or granules

3/4 part Peppermint leaves converted to powder

½ part anise herb – power or seeds

1/8 part clove - powder

If herbs and leaves are not in powder form, grind them in a coffee grinder. Use this formula to make as much powder as you want.

Place the mixture into a small container. I usually use a small-unused vitamin bottle.

I usually mix a small amount and use a tablespoon as my measuring tool. For example, 2 tablespoons of white oak, 1 tablespoon of myrrh gum, ¾ tablespoon of peppermint leaves, and so on. The measurements do not have to be so precise.

How to use it:

To control bacteria in your mouth, use this power once a week. If you have gingivitis, you can use this 3 times a day. Place some powder on your toothbrush and brush your teeth and gums. After brushing spit out, a few time, the saliva and residue powder. Don’t rinse out your mouth since you want to keep the active herb powders in your month. You can swallow any that remains in your mouth with no problem.

This powder combination is bitter, but quite powerful and will get the job done. You can add more peppermint powder to make it less bitter, if you like.

For severe cases of gingivitis and toothaches, you can also moist some powder with distilled water and then place the paste all along the your teeth and gums – front and back. Leave the paste in your mouth as long as you can. Don’t worry about the herbs getting in between your teeth.
This remedy works.

My wife was schedule for a root canal last year and a few weeks before her tooth started paining and couldn't sleep. So I made this remedy. She just placed the powers around the painful area. It wasn't long before the pain stopped and she was able to go to sleep.

There have been other clients that have used this remedy for a month and successfully avoided having the dentist apply gingivitis treatment.
In cases of severe gingivitis, go see your dentist and at the same time use this remedy.

Natural Remedy for Yeast Infection - Candida Albicans Symptom Help

By Dee Cohen

For many people the cycle of yeast infection is complicated often by
the use of antibiotics leads to a natural remedy for yeast infection
search. A common candida albicans symptom is a white discharge but
there are a number of different symptoms that vary from person to person.

Other symptoms include food allergies, itching, burning during urination, digestive problems, acne, lowered immune system and short attention span. I have seen a natural remedy for yeast infection on the internet that involved cloves of garlic and it is important to be careful with that when used in a sensitive part of your body. Also some natural remedies can be toxic to the liver
so this needs to be researched carefully.

One helpful contribution to a natural remedy for yeast infection is to avoid scented
bubble baths as well as avoiding tight underwear made of synthetic materials. It's important
to get out of swimsuits and exercise clothing quickly as yeast grows in a damp environment.
Another overlooked candida albicans symptom is a rash or redness around the area.

One step in getting a natural remedy for yeast infection is to have a swab taken by your
physician to diagnose properly. There are some good antifungals including oil of oregano,
grapefruit seed extract and clarkia , but it's good to have a well-organized systematic
plan that can synthesize antifungals, probiotics, antioxidants, hygeine and diet.

It is helpful to eat foods more on the alkalinic side. One type of apple that is not
high in sugars is the granny smith apple. I was surprised to learn that 75 percent of
women will get a yeast infection in their life time. This is why it's helpful to have
some knowledge of candida albicans symptom analysis.

One thing to be aware of is that it's easy to get a magnesium deficiency when you
have a yeast infection so try to stay conscious of this. Also hormones can play a role
in candida albicans so be aware during pregnancy as well as different times in your cycle
as sugar feeds on estrogen and progesterone. It can seem overwhelming to find a natural
remedy for yeast infection but putting together the helpful agents into a plan will give you
success. Try to not just pick and choose but use a system you follow daily.

9 Natural Remedies to Cure your Insomnia

Author: Paul Wolbers

Are you unsatisfied with your quality of sleep? Do you feel tired and un-refreshed on waking in the morning? Do you stay that way throughout the day or lack energy and have difficulty concentrating?

The World Health Organization says that one-third of the world's population experience insomnia at some stage in their lives, with approximately five per cent needing medical treatment.

To avoid medical intervention, try these natural techniques and remedies, and help put your insomnia to rest.

- Relaxation

Relax before going to bed. Do some deep breathing, listen to soft music. According to Dr. Timothy Sharp from Sydney University, avoiding caffeine, alcohol and nicotine will also help.

- Bedtime routine

Develop a bedtime routine so your body knows it's time to go to sleep. By winding down your physical activities and following a set routine prior to bed, your body will start to associate some of these actions with going to sleep. Start with a cup of hot milk. Milk contains a protein called tryptophan, which helps to promote sleep. This can be substituted with chamomile tea, which is known to calm the nerves. Follow this with a hot bath or shower, the heat will help to lower your internal body temperature, again telling your body to go to sleep.

- For sleeping only

Make your bedroom your sleep-room. Turn the lights off as soon as you get into bed. Don't read, eat or watch television in your bedroom, or do any activity that is not sleep related. Make sure the room is dark and cozy; include extra pillows on the bed and even some teddy bears. Make your bedroom into a sleep sanctuary, a room that you will instantly feel secure and comfortable in, and best of all, a room that you will crave to sleep in.

- Clear your mind

Clear your mind of the day's activities or things that are due to be done tomorrow. Write a 'to do' list for the following day. Organize uniforms, lunches, etc ... the night before. Make arrangements earlier than usual so you don't worry.

- Mind demons

Kill all the mind demons from yesteryear. Many of us have issues or events from the past that may still affect our daily lives. These issues can also mess up our sleeping patterns. Whatever these issues may be, now might be a good time to finally set things straight; forgive that person, give back that item, start talking to that family member again (or even make that appointment to see a psychologist if necessary).

- Give time back to yourself

Allow time to sleep. Instead of trying to cram as much as you can into the day then find you haven't left much time to sleep, try to find short cuts or solutions to give a little time back to yourself. Make a double casserole and freeze half for another night. Spot clean the house as you go. Have more barbecues, using paper plates (less washing-up). Offer to pay the kids, or the neighbour's kids, to do some extra chores.

- Check your diet

A balanced diet helps to make a balanced mind. If you're lacking in essential vitamins and minerals your body cannot operate at its best. Throw out the junk food and fizzy drinks, and make a new start to good physical and mental health. Add in some regular exercise and watch your body respond with some improved sleep.

- Get up

Don't lie in bed if you can't sleep. If you don't feel sleepy enough to drift off, your mind will probably anguish over the fact that you can't get to sleep. This will only make it harder to get to sleep each time you experience this. Get out of bed and go into a different room. Do something to distract yourself until you do start to feel sleepy and then try to sleep again later.

- Medications to watch

Medications may interfere with your sleep. It has been shown that some of the medications below may cause sleep problems. Check with your doctor if you are experiencing insomnia and are also taking any of these medications - amphetamines (diet pills), antidepressants, beta blockers (heart and blood pressure), cimetidine (ulcers), clonidine (blood pressure), cortisone, diuretics (fluid), levodopa (parkinsons), methyldopa (blood pressure) and ventolin (asthma).

Above all, de-stress. Sharp says that stress is the worst cause of insomnia. Use some of the techniques above and try to remove as much stress out of your life as possible, and finally put your insomnia to rest.

Natural Remedies for Sinus Headaches

Author: Sandra Kim Leong

Sinus headaches are caused by the inflammation of sinus cavities in the face. It is characterized by a deep, dull pain in front of one's head or face (at specific points such as behind the eyes or side of the nose) and the pain usually sharpens during the physical movements of the head, especially while bending down or leaning over.

The sinus headache will be at its peak during the morning hours after waking up and it generally subsides by after noon. And quite often, the pain starts when the person concerned is suffering from a bad cold or just after it.

The treatment of sinus headaches by conventional medicine concentrates on controlling the sinus inflammation and it involves antibiotic cure and sinus surgery in extreme and acute cases.

However, recent studies have shown that natural remedies for sinus headache can be effective.

They are not only successful in relieving pain associated with sinus headaches, but also are free from the side effects posed by antibiotic drugs and other medicines. Further, with natural remedies, there is no need to get the prescription of a doctor (in most cases). Instead one can manage one's own treatment from home itself. In the following paragraphs, we'll see few natural remedies for sinus headaches.

One of the best and easiest natural remedies for sinus headaches is to ease the pinching pain of a sinus headache. Use cold water applied to the forehead of the patient by means of a towel. Once the towel becomes warm, flip it over or dip in the cold water again and repeat the procedure. Taking a 30 min nap in between in a dark room may also help in relieving the pain.

Certain herbs are found to reduce the chances of getting a sinus headache by preventing cold or reducing the inflammation of sinus cavities. For example, barberry and eucalyptus are very effective in containing sinus headaches.

Another effective natural remedy for sinus headaches is eating some jalapeno pepper. It helps drain the sinus thereby reducing the pain. Peppermint steam inhalation also serves the same purpose.
In most cases, natural remedies can bring about substantial changes in the patient's condition. But in certain situations, natural remedies for sinus headaches may fail to offer complete relief and in such cases, don't hesitate to consult a doctor.

Remember, sinusitis, if left untreated for long, can lead to complications and other health issues.

Effective Home Remedies For Constipation

You can always cure constipation. If the medicines are doing nothing good to you, then you have the option of home remedial treatments.

Disturbance in your digestive tract is commonly referred to as constipation. In this disorder, there is an irregular movement of your bowels. Constipation itself is a root to many diseases and disorders. This is because it produces toxins in the blood serum and then those are carried to the other body parts. It can cause other diseases such as rheumatism, appendicitis, arthritis, cataract, high blood pressure and even cancer in some of the rarest cases.

The symptoms of constipation include irregular elimination of faecal matter that is hard in nature. The other symptoms are foul breath, coated tongue, loss of appetite, depression, nausea and dizziness. Ulcers in the mouth can also occur sometimes with varicose veins and heart burn.

The main cause of such a state of disorder is the bad lifestyle patterns that you follow, coupled with improper diet. Insufficient intake of water and excessive use of coffee and tea can also lead to this state. Drinking, irregular eating, insufficient chewing, all together makes the functioning of your bowels poor. Apart from this lack of physical activities and and irregular defecation habits with emotional stress and strain, also lead to constipation.

But you can always cure constipation. If the medicines are doing nothing good to you, then you have the option of home remedial treatments. They are:

1.Pear: It is an effective fruit for the treatment of constipation. Making it a part of your regular diet, can help you a lot.

2.Grapes: Since ages, grapes have proved to be a very effective natural remedy to cure constipation. Grapes contains sugar, cellulose and various organic acids that make them an ideal constipation healer. Besides cleaning your stomach, they also tone up the tissues of your stomach and the intestines.

3.Bael Fruit: It is regarded as the best fruit in curing this disorder. It cleans and tones up your intestinal space.

4.Guava: Guava provides you roughage that is very essential for the proper digestion of food. Roughage helps in the normal evacuation of your bowels.

5.Spinach: Spinach is the most vital food for your entire digestive system. The organic elements that are present in spinach cleanse, reconstruct and help the regeneration of the worn out tissues of your intestinal tract.

A simple diet surely helps you to keep away from constipation as it clears your stomach. A simple diet is one that consists of unrefined foods, like honey, bran, wholegrain cereals, lentils, fruits, green leafy vegetables and various milk products.

Apart from them there are also other home remedies that help in treating constipation. For instance, a glass of hot lime water, with added salt is very effective. It is also said that taking an overnight kept water in a copper container helps you considerably in this direction. Linseed is a useful product as it provides both roughage and lubrication to the stomach.

Chill Out with Natural Remedies for Hot Flashes

A womans life is full of challenging phases. Menopause is one of just a few tough transitional times that women experience. With these events come the unavoidable discomfort. Among the most difficult of these discomforts is described as sensations of heat that can flare up suddenly. Commonly known as hot flashes, many of those who suffer from it are looking for natural remedies for hot flashes.

I have a co-worker who went through this discomfort during her menopausal period. She told me that it felt as if she was briefly on fire. The pain from these bouts interfered significantly with her work. She decided to look for natural remedies for hot flashes that would alleviate her suffering so that she can focus properly on her job. Fortunately, for her and for other women suffering from the same predicament, she managed to come up with some natural remedies for hot flashes.

Among her most important discoveries in her quest of finding natural remedies for hot flashes was the significant role of stress. She discovered that stress management is a good way of preventing hot flashes. Through proper planning she was able to cope better with the stress involved in her work. She finished stressful activities in the morning when it was cooler.

She also suggested that keeping ice water in hand and wearing cooler clothing like those made of cotton can ease the discomforts of hot lashes. It would be sensible to put away wool and synthetic clothing until you get through the phase. Among her favorite natural remedies for hot flashes was sticking her head in a freezer. It may seem funny but effective nonetheless.

Making small sacrifices like cutting down on caffeine, smoking and avoiding spicy food can also help relieve the problem. If you happen to suffer from hot flashes like my co worker using natural remedies for hot flashes can lighten the burden the discomforts associated with Menopause.

Natural Remedies - My Story

Have you ever wondered which natural remedies really work? Here is one that has worked for myself and others.

Natural remedies sometimes get a bad rap from doctors and other health professionals. Certainly some of them are over-hyped and without much value. But then there is a lot of hype about traditional and accepted remedies and medicines, and many are eventually found to do as much harm as good.

Most natural remedies or medicines rarely hurt people as much as prescription drugs. This is one reason to at least consider them. The fact that many of them are not only safe to try, but inexpensive as well is another reason. Here is one I can vouch for from experience.

Curing A Skin Growth

I had a lump on the side of my nose many years back. It was growing slowly, and bleeding at times. After about seven years or so, I asked a doctor about it. He wasn't sure if it was potentially cancerous or pre-cancerous, and he recommended seeing a specialist. That sounded expensive, so I looked in a book of alternative medicines instead.

First I read about a cream called cura-derm, made from an extract from a plant called Devil's Apple. Skin cancers were regularly being cured with this. It seemed to be not only extremely effective, but safe as well.

Unfortunately, the only company selling it in the U.S. was shut down by the the regulatory agencies. Notice how doctors can kill thousands with risky medical procedures, but if an "unapproved" treatment causes so much as a skin rash it must be outlawed? I found an address of a company in England that would ship the cream here for $49, but they too were out of business by the time I tried to reach them.

Then I read somewhere that tee tree oil might work. I went to the health-food store and bought a one-ounce bottle for $6 (100% pure oil). I applied just a drop to the lump each morning. Soon the lump was getting smaller. I continued the treatment. After having this growth for many years, it took just six weeks and six dollars to be completely rid of it.

Could it be a coincidence? Maybe, if it was a one-time thing. Later in life I had another growth on my neck. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember what I had used the first time, so I did nothing for years. Then I found my old notes on tea tree oil. I used it again on this growth, which was even larger than the first one. Again it was gone in about six weeks.

Should You Try Natural Remedies?

I have used many natural remedies and herbal medicines that are very effective. I have also tried many that didn't work. However, if I add up the cost of all the effective and useless ones, it barely equals the cost of one visit to a doctor. As for the effective ones, well, no doctor yet has introduced me to one of them. You just have to do your own research, and look to the alternative press, to get information on alternative medicines.

Are natural remedies dangerous? I have never had a bad reaction to any "alternative" medicine, but everything we do has risks. Have you ever listened to the list of side effects that they put on commercials for prescription drugs? My impression is that in general, natural treatments are safer than most new prescription drugs.

Of course there is a risk in treating a problem with a medicine that may not work, while not getting a more traditional treatment that may work despite its side effects. Of course, in my own case, after having the skin growth for many years, a few weeks of natural treatment didn't mean I couldn't go to a specialist later if it didn't work. You are allowed to use your common sense in your own medical decisions, despite what some doctors would say.

If we always wait until treatments are "proven" by science, it can be a long wait. Who will do the science? A drug company can't recoup the millions spent to get a natural medicine "approved" by the FDA, because they cannot patent it. In any case, when there are safe and cheap things to try, why wait? If French explorers of this continent had waited for proof of Vitamin C before taking the cedar tea the natives offered, they would have all died of scurvy hundreds of years before science caught up with this natural remedy.

Make Your Own Natural Herbal Healing Salve

Do you remember the wonderful world of the Watkins Man coming by your home, showing you all these wonderful salves and remedies and other marvelous things? Have you ever wished you could find the Watkins Man and buy some of those salves? A good Herbal Healing Salve would be a marvelous thing to have around for all the little cuts and scrapes that one gets into around the house. Soooooo – what if you could make your own? What if it was “easy”? What if it might be even better than the Watkins variety?

I'm not really sure what I’d do without my multi-purpose homemade healing salve. I use it on gardening-inflicted sunburns, cuts and abrasions, on martial arts blisters, the grandson’s chapped cheeks and hands, insect bites when we’re wilderness camping or gold panning, and the dog’s scrapes and scratches. Herbal healing salves are gentle, soothing balms made from natural herbal ingredients.

Here’s something everyone can do, quickly and easily, at home, with no special skills.

Generally speaking they’re safe to use on kids, pets and people. They are naturally soothing and healing. In this sample recipe, herbally infused oil is chock-full of natural healing powers.

Vitamin E oil contributes antioxidants and wound-healing abilities. Tea tree oil (Melaleuca oil) provides anti-microbial, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. And lavender essential oil works it’s magic on burns and adds soothing aromatherapy.

Basic Recipe:

1 cup herbally infused oil
1 – 2 oz. Beeswax
10 capsules Vitamin E Oil
Ѕ tsp. each tea tree and lavender essential oils

In a small pan, gently heat the herbally infused oil and beeswax until barely melted. Cut or poke the vitamin E capsules open, and squeeze the vitamin E oil into the beeswax/oil mixture. Remove from heat, and add the essential oils. Pour a tiny amount of the salve mixture onto waxed paper or into a container to cool. Test it for thickness – if you’d like it to be harder, add more beeswax. If you’d like it to have a thinner balm, add more oils.

When you’re satisfied with the consistency, pour the balm into clean, sanitized jars and let cool. This all-purpose salve can be used for cuts, scrapes, splinters, diaper rash, burns, rashes, or for dry skin.

To make a herbally infused oil:

In a saucepan, combine dry herbs and a vegetable oil (we like extra virgin olive oil, but just about any kind will do). Specific proportions are not important – use a few generous handfuls of herbs and use enough oil to cover them. Heat over lowest possible heat for several hours – three minimum, we usually try for 12 or 15.

Alternatively, use a crock-pot on the “low” setting. Strain out the herbs and use your herbally infused oil to make balms, or as a massage oil, bath oil, or as a great winter moisturizer.

Some Herbs to try: chamomile, comfrey, plantain, St. John’s Wort, calendula.

The right way to take vitamins and herbs

Question : IS IT safe to take both vitamins (such as vitamins C, E and multivitamins) and other herbal remedies (such as saw palmetto and pumpkin seed) together daily? I have mild hypertension (140/90 mmHg) and digestive problems, such as bloating and flatulence. Could you give a proper schedule of taking vitamins and herbal remedies.

Answer : IT IS safe to take both supplements (such as vitamins C, E and multivitamins) and herbal remedies (such as saw palmetto and pumpkin seed) together with food daily.

But ginkgo, garlic and fish oil should not be used in patients receiving blood- thinning drugs such as warfarin. The consumption of these supplements also has to be discontinued prior to surgery because they can prolong bleeding time. There should also be a gap of three hours when taking other medications and herbal remedies.

Hawthorn, known as the "mother of the heart", is helpful for alleviating irregular heart rhythm and high blood pressure. Rosemary is a proven heart tonic which is high in calcium. It stimulates the circulatory system and pelvic region.

Typically, a healthy blood pressure reading is seen as being less than 120/80 mmHg. This level may vary according to age, stress levels and day-to-day activities.

Fish oil is important in managing high blood pressure as it lowers blood pressure, dilates blood vessels and inhibits platelet aggregation. Try a highly purified double-strength fish oil containing 65% omega-3 triglycerides. A probiotics supplement that contains both of the lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains of friendly bacteria will help reduce potentially harmful microbial enzyme activities in the intestine, thus alleviating digestive symptoms such as flatulence.

To help manage hypertension and flatulence, it is advisable to have diet that is high in fibre, complex carbohydrates, grains, legumes, fresh fruits and vegetables, but low in animal products, processed foods and refined carbohydrates. Cut down salt intake and gas-producing foods such as beans. Avoid smoking and alcoholic beverages. Maintain an ideal weight to control blood pressure. Exercise regularly to improve cardiovascular fitness. Perform relaxation techniques such as yoga to manage stress. Do not talk while eating and chew your food slowly.
